Third Aldine edition. Octavo. Bound in 18th-century red morocco, gilt spine, sides with double gilt fillet and centered with gilt monogram “JVW”. Woodcut device on title and last page. A very good copy indeed, generally very fresh. Repair to rear free endpaper.

 

PROVENANCE: Gilt monogram of one “JVW” to binding; bookplate of William Davignon to front pastedown; Professor Heribert Boeder, book collector and philosopher, his bookplate to the front pastedown. Sold at his sale (Christies, South Kensington, 17th June 2014).

 

Aldus published his third edition of Homer’s Opera in 1524 in two volumes. The Iliad (present here) was the first volume, and the Odyssey and Batrachomyomachia were contained in the second (not present here).
