Fourth impression. Octavo. Publisher’s green cloth, lettered and decorated in blue, in the original dustwrapper of Tolkien’s own design. Top edge green.

A very near fine copy, very bright, upper hinge only just starting but not unsound, in a very good dustwrapper, wear with short closed tears and a little loss to the spine end; this unhelpfully mended with adhesive tape by a former owner, now removed but with remaining residue. Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Housed in a bespoke slipcase.

The fourth impression of The Hobbit, printed in an edition of 4,000 copies in July 1946, but not bound until the autumn of 1947 and published on 18th November.
