A late fifteenth century - early sixteenth century antiphonal leaf for the Feast of the Pentecost from the Brölemann collection, France.
Handwritten on vellum in black and red ink, in gothic script in Latin. The recto has eight lines of music for the in square chant notation with red four line staves and eight lines of lyrics and two decorated initials illuminated with fauna and flora and coloured in liquid gold, blue, red, green and pink. The verso has eight lines of music for the in square chant notation with red four line staves and eight lines of lyrics with two decorated initials, one illuminated with a grotesque and the other with three flower buds, illuminated in liquid gold, green, blue and red. The verso has a historiated initial ‘A’ with a scene of the Pentecost which is richly decorated. The marginal imagery has acanthus leaves, berries and flowers, with two figures picking fruit in the lower margin illuminated in liquid gold, blue, green, red, and yellow.
(484 x 355 mm.) A very good example. Slight insect-damage to the lower right-hand margin. The upper and lower margins have been trimmed.
