First edition, privately printed. Octavo. Publisher’s quarter cloth over blue paper covered boards, lettered black to the upper cover and spine. Inscribed by St. John Hornby for Ambrose Heal to the front free endpaper, “Ambrose Heal from C.H. St. J. Hornby, 8 Nov. 1929.” A very good copy.
PROVENANCE: Ambrose Heal (1872-1959), arts and crafts furniture designer, inscribed for him by Charles St. John Hornby.
An excellent association copy, uniting two important figures of the Arts And Crafts Movement. Charles St. John Hornby was both a director at W. H. Smith and Sons, and the founder of the Ashendene Press. Ambrose Heal was a furniture maker and owner of Heal’s, and he steered them away from Queen Anne and Old English style furniture and towards the Arts and Crafts movement.
Heal was also a customer of Hornby’s, and collected Ashendenes.
